Effects of Cannabis on Adolescent Brain



Legalization of marijuana in Indonesia was so warm conversation after 7 May LingkarGanjaNusantara ask marijuana legalized. Although it has some benefits, marijuana is considered a type of narcotic that can make users addicted, experiencing hallucinations, momentary euphoric effect, lazy, and slow.
The effect of marijuana use could be worse for adolescents who are still in the growth stage. A study was conducted by a team from the Federal University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, to determine the effects of cannabis use in adolescents.

The study, published in The British Journal of Psychiatry analyzed the mental functions of the 100 users who consume cannabis on a regular basis for 10 years and 50 respondents who are not users of marijuana.

They found that 49 people who start taking cannabis user since the age of 15 years have control impulsivity and poorer cognitive function. In the card sorting test, they make more mistakes. This compared with 55 respondents, a late start smoking marijuana, and 44 respondents who are not users of marijuana.



"Those who use marijuana as a teenager to have a worse cognitive function. That's because, in adolescence the brain is in a very vulnerable period of neurotoxic effects of cannabis, "said head researcher Dr. Maria Fontes, as quoted by the Daily Mail.

The use of marijuana as a teenager may lead to decreased cognitive function and mental bad for users. According to Dr. Maria, at the age of 15 years the brain is still developing and maturing in a period so that the use of marijuana would be very dangerous.

For the sake of health and reduce the crime rate, the Netherlands, legalizing marijuana too, starting next year will limit consumption of marijuana for residents and tourists. It seems that the legalization of marijuana in Indonesia or to make it equivalent to cigarettes (soft drugs), remains to be considered again.
